How Home Health Care Helped My Mom

What Are Some Different Types Of Elder Home Care?

by Stanley Pierce

As loved ones age, it is often left up to their family members to decide what type of elder care they will receive. It is not uncommon for older people to no longer be able to live alone without someone assisting them with their daily routine. However, it is not always possible for their loved ones who may also be working full time and managing their own households to provide the needed help. Fortunately, there are different types of elderly care services that provide assistance to ensure the needs of the elderly are met.

Adult Day Care Centers

Adult day care centers are available for those who are elderly or disabled. In these facilities, people can stay at the center during the times that there are no friends or family members available to supervise them. Adult day care centers provide meals, activities and personal care and can administer medications that need to be taken during the person's stay. Adult day care centers are also great for regular socialization for the elderly who might not otherwise spend much time with people their own age.

Assisted Living Communities

Assisted living communities are another type of elderly care service. Assisted living communities are similar to apartment complexes, but they are only for disabled people or senior citizens. Residents have rented apartments, but there are staff members that help provide their daily care. Depending upon the needs of the resident, the type of assistance may vary. The care provided may include preparing meals, housekeeping, giving personal hygiene assistance, providing transportation and administering daily medications.

Nursing Home Facilities

If an elderly person needs to have constant supervision, a nursing home facility may be the best option for elderly care services. Elderly people reside in these facilities, and all of their care is provided. Meals are prepared, personal care is given, laundry service is provided and medical treatment is given as needed.

Physicians make regular visits to nursing home facilities to provide medical care for ill patients and preventative care for healthy patients. If residents need to go to appointments with specialists or emergency care medical centers, transportation is arranged by or provided by the nursing home facility.

Determining which type of elderly care service is the best fit for a loved one depends mainly on their mental and physical needs. Adult day care centers provide part-time care, while both assisted living communities and nursing home facilities offer full-time care to elderly or disabled residents.
